Great, full-on blowing session by a great band 12 Jun 2006
Chris Potter is fast becoming one of the most highly regarded tenor saxophonists around, and this, his first album under his own name, offers a fantastic showcase of his impressive talent. Potter has recorded with Dave Holland on several occasions, and has won the Danish Jazzpar prize.
The recording presents four originals and two standards, Potter is well supported by the excellent Kevin Hays on piano, Scott Colley on bass and Bill Stewart on drums. The playing is forthright, and often technically very impressive, but it is not what one would call an easy listen. One of the most interesting numbers is Okinawa, which opens with great delicacy, and unfolds into a rocking, vibrant rhythm section workout. Other highlights include Potter's solo introduction to Boogie Stop Shuffle, and the opening track, 7.5.
Down Beat apparently rated Potter as an artist "worthy of further attention." On the evidence of this CD, that is somewhat understated. He is a huge talent on the tenor sax, and this CD comes very highly recommended.
